Friends of the Poor Walk is a National program of the Society of St. Vincent de
Paul. The inaugural event took place in 2008 with the purpose of providing local
Conferences and Councils the framework to host an event that would raise funds
for their Conference or Conferences. The event has grown each year, attracting
over 18,000 walkers, raising over $1.4M with over 1,000 Conferences and Councils
This is the 8th Annual walk sponsored by the South Central District Council of the
Society of St. Vincent de Paul. This casual one mile walk benefits needy
individuals and families in Norman, Moore, Purcell and surrounding areas by
providing housing and utility assistance, disaster relief, and furniture. There are
no administrative fees, and all proceeds directly benefit clients in the South
Central District Council area. In other words, all revenue generated by the Walk is
targeted to programs of service to the poor and stays in the local communities.
Last year the District Council helped 11,432 needy people in central Oklahoma
and we distributed $343,768 in financial aid and $163,780 in furniture and other

others in need.
